Mysoda has developed a range of sparkling water makers made of wood composite, which is made almost entirely of renewable raw materials. Development work has been carried out together with UPM Biocomposites. Small kitchen appliances have traditionally been made of fossil-based plastic, so the result of the development work will significantly reduce the product’s carbon footprint and raise the product group’s environmental friendliness to a whole new level.
UPM Formi EcoAce wood composite, which is made from wood fibres and a renewable biopolymer based on UPM BioVerno oil, has been used as a raw material for Mysoda’s carbonation equipment. The materials originate in sustainably managed forests and are residues of wood and pulp processes. In this way, they do not harm the food-production chain and do not increase logging.
“The collaboration in developing the new product has been intense but rewarding for both parties. The product perfectly implements UPM’s Beyond Fossils strategy. Wood fibres are an inspiring source of inventions and a great substitute for fossil materials. Strong collaboration from idea to design and materials led to a completely new kind of product concept. The journey together and the resulting innovations have been very inspiring,” says Ralf Ponicki, President of UPM Formi.
“We are very pleased to introduce an even more environmentally friendly device for making sparkling water – a device that perfectly meets the expectations and values of both consumers and our company. Consumers want to make carbonated water at home instead of carrying plastic bottles. We are taking a big leap in this product group by bringing consumers an ecologically sustainable alternative. We want to be a pioneer and an example to other manufacturers of consumer products in the transition to more environmentally friendly materials. Just as every tree is unique, so is every Mysoda device,” says David Solomon, CEO of Mysoda.
“Striving for more sustainable solutions are the cornerstones of good product design. With UPM Formi EcoAce, it was possible not only to create an interesting design but also to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the product. I am very pleased with the unique result and the fact that I was able to work with my team to develop a more ecologically sustainable consumer product,” says Arni Aromaa.
Mysoda carbonation equipment will be sold by well-equipped dealers in Finland and several European countries from October 2020.
